The Shack vs. The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe

What is the difference between what Young does in this:

and what Lewis does in this?:

Or what Bunyan did in this?: On the cover of the Shack: “This book has the potential to do for our generation what John Bunyan’s pilgrim’s progress did for his. It’s that good!”

The shack seems to be generally condemned by the conservative evangelical community, while the latter two books are generally praised and cherished. I have not read the shack. I have seen this, though, and I feel Driscol’s concerns. Yet, symbolism is a powerful way to communicate truth. Jesus uses it all the time in the gospels. So I’m wandering what the difference is? Who decides what’s heretical symbolism and what’s ‘heavenly’ symbolism? These questions are not meant to be rhetorical. If you have some incite please leave a comment. Thanks!
